A burst pipe that flooded three floors of Grady Hospital over the weekend is causing headaches at nearby Emory University Midtown Hospital.
On Tuesday evening, Emory began diverting ambulances from its emergency room after being inundated with a high volume of patients because of Grady’s total ER diversion due to the flooding issue. Emory officials said it would still treat walk-in patients at the ER.
With nearly 2,000 emergency and trauma patients arriving daily at Grady, the diversion is causing strain at other area hospitals, too, according to reports.
A 24-inch water pipe burst on Dec. 7 flooding the sixth floor, causing damage on two other floors and knocking out power to parts of the hospital. Grady was forced to transfer 150 patients to other hospitals.
The ER diversion at Grady is expected to be lifted on Wednesday, Dec. 11, while work to get at least one of the flooded floors reopened should be complete by the weekend. It may take several months to repair the others, according to Grady officials.
