Interfor Invests $30 Million in Expanding Sawmill in Perry
Staff reports, on May 10, Governor Brian P. Kemp announced that Interfor, a forest products company and the largest lumber producer in the state, will invest $30 million in expanding their sawmill operations in Perry, Georgia. “It’s great to see a lumber industry leader like Interfor continue to reinvest in the state, especially in our rural regions,” said Governor Kemp.

Business groups warn about labor shortage
Tamar Hallerman reports that more than a dozen groups that advocate for the state’s businesses called on officials to end the $300 federal subsidy that unemployed Georgians have been receiving during the pandemic. The weekly subsidy is discouraging unemployed people from looking for work at a time when some businesses are desperate for employees, according to the organizations, which include the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, the Georgia Farm Bureau and the Georgia Association of Manufacturers.

Texas-based cabinet maker, Republic Elite, creating 125 new jobs in Lawrenceville through relocation, expansion
Curt Yeomans reports that a Texas-based cabinet manufacturer is expanding and relocating to Gwinnett County after acquiring a Lawrenceville-based company, Partnership Gwinnett and the Georgia Department of Economic Development announced Thursday. Republic Elite’s relocation to Lawrenceville, after the acquisition of Windsor Kitchen and Bath, is expected to create 125 new jobs in Gwinnett County through the corporate expansion and relocation.

Georgia Repeals Citizens Arrest Law In Ahmaud Arbery’s Name
Emma Hurt reports that about a a year after the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery became national news, and nearly 15 months after he was shot while jogging down a Brunswick street, Georgia has repealed the vague law that is being used to defend the men in jail for his murder.

Kemp approves $27B state budget
Nyamekye Daniel reports that Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed the state’s $27.2 billion budget for the 2022 fiscal year on Monday, approving a 2.5% increase in spending over the current fiscal year. The plan for spending, starting July 1 through June 30, 2022, gradually replaces more than $2 billion that was cut from the budget at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kemp nixes plan to create legislatively appointed chief labor officer
Jill Nolin reports that Gov. Brian Kemp has struck down the Legislature’s attempt to create a new high-level staffer who would share duties with the state’s elected labor commissioner. “While I understand the frustration that many in our state have felt regarding the backlog of unemployment claims, (this bill) proposes significant infringement on the separations of powers guaranteed by Georgia’s Constitution,” the governor said in his veto statement.
